Candace Kane's Candy Factory

Candace Kane

What a lonely week for Nintendo DS releases. Only Candace Kane’s Candy Factory, which actually was scheduled for release last week but now appears to be shipping Dec. 22. (All those caveats are because release dates are so flaky.)

I decided to take a closer look at the Candace Kane game, which I admit at first I thought it sounded kinda like an adult film star name. But this puzzle game’s gameplay actually seems to mimic more the I Love Lucy episode where they’re racing to get all the candies off the conveyor belt. The game is produced by Destineer Inc., which previously made Burger Island. In Candy Factory, players help Candie and Colin swap candies to make a pattern displayed on the DS screen to comply with customers’ orders. Multi-player play sounds especially fun and competitive. If you want to get a better sense of the concept before buying, just search for the game title: It’s been available as PC shareware for some time, and free trials are available. Candace Kane’s Candy Factory is also coming out in Wii format; the DS version is priced at $19.99.

Grey’s Anatomy Coming to Nintendo DS

Grey's Anatomy

Grey

Will it be McDreamy or just McWeird? Ubisoft has developed a game for Nintendo DS (as well as a Wii version, pictured) based on the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy.

Several gaming Web sites have reported on the game’s existence based on content summaries from the ESRB. Apparently, there won’t be a surgery component like the DS game Trauma Center: Under the Knife. It will be more of a role-playing game, including romance, but there will be mini games with what sounds like Operation-style stylus moves. The scheduled release date is May 10, 2009.

So, what could be next in hospital show-DS crossovers? Maybe a game based on ER, or (this will date me), St. Elsewhere. The St. Elsewhere game could turn out to only exist in the mind of a child. (Sorry, obscure St. Elsewhere reference.)

Pretty in Pink, Clueless, Mean Girls Basis of Pending Nintendo DS Games

Teen Angst on DS

Teen Angst on DS

If you’re as old I as I am, you’ll remember the 1986 John Hughes film Pretty in Pink. (Ah, Duckie.) If you’re a decade younger, you’ll identify more with 1995′s Clueless. If you were coming of age circa 2004, Mean Girls may define your generation. Whatever teen chick flick niche you fall into, the Nintendo DS will soon have a game for you. Paramount studios has partnered with Legacy Interactive to produce games based on the hit films. (Legacy Interactive is behind Zoo Vet: Endangered Animals.) The tagline is “This Time You Rule the School,” and the scheduled release date is January or February 2009 for the PC version, so the DS version should not be far behind.

Clueless seems to be targeted to preteen or teen girls, as it reportedly has a fashion and matchmaking focus. Mean Girls is more of a puzzle game with a simulation-style game based on social cliques, which of course need to be perpetuated. (Although Patrick Dempsey sure did well for himself after playing the geek in Can’t Buy me Love.) Pretty in Pink sounds like it could intrigue the (cringe) older set, with a hidden object puzzle game not unlike MillionHeir.

Now, I’ve got to go find my Pretty in Pink soundtrack. I have it on cassette and CD. Psychedelic Furs, anyone?

Build a Lot

Build a Lot

The new releases are getting lean as Christmas nears. I’ve been looking forward to Slingo Quest, which was slated to come out last week and features bingo-style games with a desert island theme. Of course, if you’re studying for a driver’s test, Driver’s Ed Portable could be a good choice.

For DS Divas
Build a Lot (a simulation game)
Cate West The Vanishing Files (discover clues with the stylus)
Left Brain Right Brain 2
Slingo Quest

And the Rest
Drivers’ Ed Portable
