Scrabble Nintendo DS

Scrabble and Henry Hatsworth Released for DS This Week

This is a big week for Nintendo DS fans. The hard core gamers can finally get their hands on Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, while more casual gamers can get the eagerly anticipated followup to Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure. I have my eye on Scrabble, even though I have Scrabble for my still-working original GameBoy. Scrabble for DS is currently on sale for $27.99 ($2 off) as a preorder through Amazon.

I’ve learned to take release dates with a grain of salt, because releases and shipments are often delayed, but here are some other DS titles you might expect this week:

Personal Trainer: Math

The Personal Trainer: Math “game” for Nintendo DS hit store shelves about a week ago, and Nintendo is working hard to promote it. It’s no easy task—we are talking about math, after all. (And I’m sure math-is-tough stereotypes like that are part of the problem.) The game is being targeted not only toward students but also to adults who want to build their math skills, whether for day-to-day use or to help their kids with their homework.

The game includes educational activities for all ages (Well, ages 5 to 55, according to Nintendo.) There’s a daily test, practice exercises and something called the Kagyama method for 100-cell Math and Division Marathon. “Math is fun again,” Nintendo promises.

On Feb. 8, the Nintendo World Store in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza is hosting the Battle on the Plaza, featuring Personal Trainer: Math. To sign up, call 646-459-0800.
There’s an entire Web site dedicated to Personal Trainer: Math. Next up in the popular Personal Trainer series is Personal Trainer: Walking.

SimAnimals released

Want to befriend a wild hedgehog? Or perhaps another woodland creature is more your style. SimAnimals for Nintendo DS (and Wii, too) is shipping this week, which means fans of the long-popular Sims series can get their Sim fix. But this new game may be the one that converts non-Sims people, including the casual gamer. The reasons? Cute animals and the interactive nature of the game. Players can extend a “hand” to pet, feed and even pick up bears, deer, rabbits and other animals in the woods.

But the creatures also take on lives of their own, and must contend with predators, forest fires. Players add plant life, move animals to more appropriate habitats, clean polluted areas and solve other challenges to create the best possible forest environment. The Nintendo DS stylus can be used to interact with the animals and blowing into the microphone frees fruit from trees, spreads blossoms and other things.
